Ideas for small bedrooms

Small bedroom paint color

Paint color matters greatly in a small bedroom
The first thing should be is to paint the walls and ceiling. That is provided you can. If you live in an apartment that might not be an option. And if that's the case you are stuck with whatever color is currently on the walls.

But that may not be all bad because it's most likely going to be a neutral color with is good. If you own your home or have permission to paint now is the time to decide weather or not you want a dark color or a light color bedroom.

My advise is since you have a small bedroom the practical choice is to choose a light neutral color. By using a light color this gives the illusion of a much larger room. It gets rid of the feeling that you are boxed in. It brightens up the room considerably. One of my favorite is Behr's Hazelnut Cream 750C-2 in the Marquee line.

Best paint for small bedrooms
Behr's Hazelnut Cream
Here is why I like this paint. The Marquee line of paint contains a primer and delivers exceptional hiding and advanced stain-blocking. It's their most advance paint. If you are going to go to the trouble of doing all the work go ahead and spend a few dollars more and get the best paint quality because most likely you are not going to repaint for years to come. There are many other brands of paint that are good so if you have first hand experience with a particular brand then get their best or top line of paint. It's not worth going cheap on paint.

If you are close to Memorial Day you are in luck because Behr usually has this line of paint on sale or you can get a rebate for $10.00 per gallon. They may have other sales but this is the only one I am familiar with.

The Hazelnut Cream color gives enough of a contrast from the White trim and White ceiling. So now that your room is all in a nice light color you are ready to add accent colors to liven up the space. Plus the great thing is you can change out the decor at any time using a completely different color and get a new look. It's now becomes simple and easy to change up the look of your bedroom.

Say no to big bulky bed frames designs

The last thing you want in a small bedroom is a big bulky bed frame or canopy frame dominating your space. You need all the space you can get. I even recommend going as far as getting a bed with no foot board. A good option is a Serta SER-1870BRG-I premium elite clamp style bed frame. If you can't find this particular model there are others out there that are similar. Please note if you go this route you will need a box spring.

Another option is just use a simple frame like the one shown below. You can get these in different colors to suit your needs. Plus the big advantage is that no box spring is needed. The biggest drawback of going this route is you will have no space under the bed to store anything unless you purchase a bed riser.

Storage is extremely important in small bedrooms. So if you can you want to utilize under bed storage options. This is a huge area of wasted space that you can use if you get the right storage containers. One option is from Ikea Rattan Under-bed storage box - $50.00

Also the clear plastic under bed latching boxes works great. They are lower in cost and have wheels on the bottom for easy sliding. You actually can pack a lot of items in two of these plastic bins. For example, you can store extra sheets and or clothes. Like winter clothes in the summer. Items you may not need for a few months. $43.99 HOMZ 60 Qt. Mirrors for small bedrooms

Yelton full length mirror - Wayfair
Any kind of mirror is great for the bedroom. Like mentioned above it gives the illusion of more space. Make sure to mount the mirror on the wall or position it so that it reflects light from a nearby window. This increases the effects of the mirror. Any shape or kind of mirror will do but the bigger the better. And if you can fit two mirrors in your room that that is super! The mirror above is the Yelton Rustic Full Length Mirror from Wayfair - $232.99

Use two mirrors for double the effect - making a small room feel bigger
My favorite design is to use two mirrors. Hang a round medium sized mirror over a dresser and utilize another stand-up mirror in the coroner for the room. This technique works well to reflect a lot of light and makes the room appear much bigger. Sometime you can find mirrors on close-out for $60.00 at Wayfair like the one pictured below.

Floating shelves for a small bedroom is a must

Floating shelves down to the floor
Floating shelves give you added storage and decor space above dressers and other furniture. the big plus is even if you do not have any furniture you can run the shelves all the way down to the floor like in the image shown above. Many of these shelves can be built by the DIY person or purchased while on sale like in the image below.

Bedroom shelving

A picture frame ledge shelf is a perfect way to show paintings, photos and other decor. You can read my other article on this site entitled, picture frame ledge shelf. This article shows different option and costs and also covers a little about DIY shelves.

Chrome for small bedrooms

Chrome bedroom lamp with led bulb
The more chrome you can use the better provided you like chrome. This technique uses the same principal as the mirrors. It's another shiny reflective surface adding more light and making the room appear much bigger than it really is. If you are not a big fan of chrome or it does not fit into your style then that's OK, just choose a lamp and or other items that are not bulky but rather slender and more light weight looking. This gives the room a simple uncluttered look which looks much bigger that a cluttered room. The lamp picture above is the Ikea Stockholm table lamp with an led bulb -$54.99.

When should Christmas decorations be put up

When should Christmas decorations be put up? Christmas decorations are typically displayed in late November or early December. This timing is generally to coincide with the beginning of Advent or the four Sundays and weeks before Christmas. The traditional beginning of Christmas time in the US is Thanksgiving. Most people start decorating for Christmas on November 12th.

But that might be a little too early for some folks. So an alternative is December 1. There are some folks who have their Christmas tree already up even before Halloween. In my opinion that’s a little too early. Those folks are really into Christmas. Decorations to be put up when you start to see ads

Another rule of thumb is to start decorating when you start to see ads for Christmas. You can always start by scaling up. Start out small and then add bigger items as it get closer to Christmas. It seems like ads come earlier and earlier every year due to Christmas is a big money makes for most businesses.

Some families do not put up Christmas decorations till after Remembrance Day or Veterans Day which is on November 11th due to paying respects to those who fought. In the United States the name was give after the Korean War and observed by memorial services and parades. I personally like to put up Christmas lights and big outdoor decorations while the weather is not too cold. I then have the option to turn them on whenever I feel like it’s the right time without being obnoxious to my neighbors.

When to put up a Christmas tree?

As for putting up the Christmas tree I guess it mainly depends if you have a real or artificial tree. I feel you can put up an artificial tree much earlier than a real tree. Real trees tend to dry out fast inside if you are not careful. Reals trees are generally put up about two weeks before Christmas. This is give plenty of time to enjoy the tree and it does not dry out. An artificial tree can be put up much earlier. Lately I have been using an artificial tree and will put it up the weekend after Thanksgiving.

When to mail Christmas cards?

Back in the old days Christmas cards were mailed out early in December. I had many signed and addressed to friends and relatives. It took days to prepare the envelopes and cards. I remember they cost a fortune and well as took up much of my time. Now days with email and texting I have been lax with the Christmas cards. I no longer send out munches of cards.

When should you start decorating for fall

When should you start decorating for Fall? The best time is in mid August. Start mid August to maximize the amount of time decorations are displayed. Décor can stay out till late October with no problems. Too early in August is not good because décor will not be in sync with the seasons.

Fall decor

Here is how to decorate for fall

It seems the fall season comes around faster and faster every year. Before you know it it’s time to start thinking about the holidays and decorating for fall. since you are reading this article you also my want to read another of my articles on when to decorated for Halloween. And don't forget about Christmas, when to start decorating for Christmas?

Simple Fall decorating tips:
  1. Always start decorating in stages to avoid confusion and to be in sync with the seasons.
  2. The best time to bring out your fall decor is in mid August.
  3. Garnish by adding pine cones and greenery. This decor gives the most bang for the buck.
  4. To add finishing touches choose cream or cream colors along with bright orange.
  5. Spruce up your entry way by adding small white pumpkins.
  6. Add colors that are deep earthy tones and add stripes and plaids.
  7. Add fall colored candles. Votive candles in fall colors are excellent.
  8. Decorate a small table or foyer space using small clay flower pots.
  9. Use croton, kalanchoe, snakeroot, sweet alyssum or goldenrods plants to fill the pots.
  10. And don’t forget to add the most popular and festoon fall decor of all the mum.

Fall decorating in stages

I always start in stages to avoid confusion and being in sync with the seasons. At first I start with something small and simple. I add a decorative festive wreath. Then add small white pumpkins to the entry way. Another great idea is to place small pumpkins on the table or to transform your room by swapping out summer pillows for fall ones.

Where to start decorating

There are hundreds of ways to decorate your house for the fall. And the good news is that most of them are really simple and easy to do. Making your house look festive is easy when you stagger pumpkins, gourds, haystacks and or fall foliage across your front steps. You can even make an arrangement across your fireplace mantel. Adding pine cones and greenery gives the most bang for the buck. Depending on where you live you might be able to find everything you need in your yard. To keep the décor in line with the fall season choose a cream or cream colors along with a bright orange. These are fall colors and also go well with Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Decorating a fireplace

How to decorate your fireplace mantel. Start by making a quick rustic arrangement using fall leaves. Gather some colorful fall leaves and use a small with to twist them on to a rope. What you will end up with is a beautiful festive garland. The garland can then be attached to your fireplace mantel using adhesive plastic hooks or clear tape. Be sure to hide the hooks and or tape by placing them behind leaves. You are almost done.

Next when you are out and around look for fall colored candles. Votive candles in fall colors are excellent. Using some decorative rope or ribbon ties a few strand around your votive and place a leave in between the rope and you’re votive. Place these along your fireplace mantel. Now you have a beautiful festive fall décor for your fireplace. If you have all the supplies you can accomplish this in about thirty minutes or less. Plus most of the material you can get for free.

Decorating a table

Decorating a small table or foyer space can be easy too. I like to take a small clay flower pot and place a small festive pant like a croton, kalanchoe, snakeroot, sweet alyssum or goldenrod. Add this to a small table or an area in your foyer. Add a few small pumpkins and scatter some leaves across the table. For contrasting colors and to make your arrangement more interesting you can add creamy colored gourds.

Decorating with mums

Mums in galvanized containers make a striking statement
And of course not to forget the most popular décor of all for the fall is mums. You cannot go wrong with adding the perfect late bloomer. Chrysanthemums are very hearty this time of year. Most people don’t realize they are both annuals and perennials at the same time. Today most are hybrids which are a cross between hundreds of species from overseas. It’s easy to set out a few mums on the front poach. They do very well in the full autumn sun. Just make sure you give them plenty of water. Check the soil every other day and if dry then give them a good soaking. One good trick when buying mums is to look for a plant that has more buds than open flowers. If you have to re-pot the plant it will be less stressful for the pant and the plan will last longer into the season.
